ok my car wolnt come out of 1st gear and i have a 700r4 repair manual and it says i basically have a busted or worn out governer gear
can i fix this if so how or do i need a shop to do so. does it require dropping the tranny????

 

I changed one in my '84 camaro, it was a tight fit but I only had to remove the governor cover, getting the cover back on is the tough part.
I bought the gear from a small family owned trans shop, the larger chain stores usually won't sell small parts. GM might be able to get you one. I paid under $5 for a genuine GM part.
