Thanks to David Auster (great guy btw) I should have a tranny to replace the bad one in my car. I had the old tranny rebuilt about 5,000 miles ago and a S10/Vette type converter installed. Well I think the TV stuck in it becuase the tranny would shift hard and late after doing some wot runs. It would shift around 3500/4000 at pt, I drove it till the tranny lost 3/4th gear took about two weeks, I had no choice at the time. It Will only shift to 2nd now, if I flush the converter out can I reuse it? Could the lockup clutches have been damaged? I dont want to put it in and find out that its damaged, but its pretty much new. I really dont have the extra cash right now to replace it either.

What should I do?

Thanks,
Mike

I just had kind of the same thing happen to my trans, I lost 3rd and 4th gear. The transmission was rebuilt only 20k miles ago so I wanted to re-use my torque converter, but everyone advised against it, and it turned out the bearing in it was shot. Shake your torque converter and if you hear rattling then its probably trash. Also, if you look down inside the TC where it slides on the input shaft, you will see a bearing, well actually you can see the rollers. Try to move this bearing side to side with your finger. If it moves any or feels loose, then its no good. This is what happened to mine and jsut happens to be what killed my transmission. I would not recommend re using it.
