What causes the 2-3 shift tranny slip in the 700r4?

I know that this question has been asked numerous times but what exactly causes this annoying condition? Why are there so many transmissions out there that have the same problem? It seems that GM would have had a recall or something for this problem.

Like you said, many people seem to have the same prob with the 700r4. I am sure I read somewhere that there is a HP rating for the 700r4 and exceeding it seems to cause the tranny to bite the big one. I also had this problem, mine was between 1st and 2nd though. Now I have no overdrive and I am pulling it out this weekend to put in the turbo350.

Too many to list but includes the inherent design flaws and overrevving in 1st/2nd.

From the beginning the 700R4 has had 2-3 shift (capacity) problems. It 1994-95 they introduced the Borg Warner Hi-Energy 3-4 clutches (1st design), this helped somewhat, then they introduced the 2nd design, (still 6 clutches though) which was an improvement over the first design and is still in use to this day in the 4L60E's. I hear that they have went to 7 clutches on certain models, but I have not had it verified. Either way I have the parts to do this right the first time.

Probuilt,
I just purchased a shift kit from U last night.I didnt have the $ for the "total" kit which was almost $500.00 I would like to know if I were to add extra clutches ?? / Or do I add extra steels ?? to make a tighter trans ? The stock clearances seem to sloppy for my taste. What type of clutches should I buy?

Dana,
The 4L65E uses a 7 pack 3-4, along with 5 pinion planets. 2000 Cadillac Escalade has it, if I remember correctly.
