I need to know if swapping a 700R-4 trans from an 88 GTA into an 87 GTA originally equipped with a T-5 will work. I know the trans will fit, but what I need to know about is the computer change. It's my dad's car and we've tried putting an auto trans prom into the 87 while the T-5 was still alive and the car wouldn't turn over. Now that the T-5's dead we've decided to go with the 700. I need to know if I can just transfer the 88 computer over to 87 along with auto prom and will it run, since the 87 computer with the 88 chip didn't?

If both cars are TPI the computers are the same. You can verify this by checking the service #s on the ECMs. If they are the same then just swap the PROMs.

 

F THAT...700R4s are JUNK...and un reliable....welll...all autos are too damned complicated and break.....for my HP use car....stick and stick only...

 

If you think the 700R4's are crappy and break, wait till you try and really use the T5...KABOOM!!!

It wouldn't start probably cuz the ECM didn't know the car was in park. Need to wire up the Park/Neutral Safety switch, or bypass it all together.
