Need trans help...

The car is an 89 GTA, 350 TPI. I bought an 86 700R4 from a friend, opened it up, everything was fresh, so I installed a TransGo kit (the best one they have) install went off without a hitch, car shifts great, BUT, when going from N or P into drive or reverse, the trans feels like its hammering into gear, the car bunkers down and all. What causes that? Due to the fact that the car isn't fully tuned yet, it cause it to stall when putting it into reverse today. How can I fix this? Guys, this thing is brutal... this car doesnt like going into reverse, it will stall on occasion.. thats how harsh it is. It will also chirp sometimes going into D or R... with my foot on the brake... whats goin on? I was thinkin maybe something with the convertor was up ( not allowing engine to idle when in reverse?) If my pressure is too high... what can I do about it? BTW, I know this makes it worse, but I currently have the car set to idle at around 1500 RPM in P or N... anything lower, and it will stall when put in gear.It idles at about 600-00 RPM in drive, if that helps at all. Today I had to power brake it to get the damn thing out of my uncles garage bay (w/ lift).

TIA

Sounds like you have a number of things crossed up. Start with the engine first. Sounds like a massive vaccum leak, crossed plug wires. plug wire off, ignition timing retarded. Get the engine to idle normally ~700 rpm in park, then try to sort out the trans.

The engine WILL idle at 700 just fine, but then, when I put it in gear, it dies. Pulls strong, no missing, no problems with that. Thats why I cant figure it out. I know engines, just hate these trannies.

TIA

I don't know what is your problem, but in my opinnion, at first you needs stop your car. If the trans is hammering, a big damage will result in no time!!!.

Then, thinks slowly and review all the install process of the TransGo kit (at first, on "paper", then, if necessary, direct at tranny on a "reverse" install process). Be patient, review step by step. Some thing was bad.

Assuming you have a lock up torque convertor, it may be the torque convertor is not unlocking. I'm not sure what the control circuitry is like, but I'd start looking there. An electrically actuated valve is located near the valve body in the trans (i.e. remove your trans pan).

Verify that your TV cable is functioning properly.
It needs to be fully pulled at full throttle and return to
idle pressure at idle. If the cable is slightly pulled at idle
the trans pressure will be exessive at idle causing the hard gear engagement.
Temperarily disconnect the tv cable so it can return all the way and try putting the car in gear. If it is now has reasonable
engagement you'll have to rework the cable geometry to get the proper throttle/ tv valve relationship.
The cable may be bad and binding in its sheath also. If so replace it.
You may have to remove the pan to observe the TV valve motion
and adjust the cable and linkage to get it right.

Do not drive the car with the TV cable disconnected...
Search the posts for Transfix Leo's cable adjustment instructions.
It's a good way to start.
