Rear end identification

Does anybody know what rear end options were available for a 1982 Z28 with the Crossfire 305? Is there a cross reference if I have the rear end tag??? I am just currious what is under my new project car. I read somewhere that it should at least have a posi because of the motor, but I do not know anytthing else about it. Are they still identified by counting the rear cover bolts?

Thanks

should be a 10 bolt, caount the cover bolts and you'll know for sure. look for a g80 rpo to see if it's posi, or better yet pull the cover and take a look around

there are 19 listed axle codes for 82 Camaro. look on the front of the drivers side axle tub for the axle code. Will need to wire brush the rust off, will be in the center of tube. will read 2JZ, 2KH... etc. If you can get your axle code I can tell you what you have.

I couldnt find the code, even after scraping down to the metal, but it does have 10 bolts, posi, and disk brakes, I guess that I will have to pull the cover for the gear ration. The only tag I found on the diff cover was the limited slip warning.

Did they come with different size axle shafts, or ring gears??

Thanks,

all had same size gears and axles, only differance is ratio, i'll bet you have 3:23 or 3:42, it's stamped on the side of the ring gear as a ratio, actually it's the teeth count but you can do te math and get the actuall number

You can also look for the RPO code sticker in the center console and enter the codes in the RPO decoder on the thirdgen homepage. I know that a G92 RPO code on a 84 Z28 is a 3.73 ratio.

Manual transmission had 3.23 gears and an open carrier.

Automatic transmission had 2.93 gears with an open carrier but also had the option of 3.23 gears and posi with the G92 RPO.

All choices will be a 10 bolt with 7.5" ring gear.

Bob8748,

Doohhhh, I should have known something was wrong when I sanded all the way to the axle shaft and still did not see the code. I will be pulling the rear end this wekend for a nice spit and polish job anyway. I know it is a posi so by the info posted by Stephen 87 IROC it should have the 3.23 gears in it.

Thanks to all who replied....
