i just picked up this rear for free, its not in bad shape at all, the code on it says its a 3.42 posi, is there anyway to check this, when i spin the yoke both tires spin in the same direction, but when i spin one side i can still hold the other side still, is it really a posi, im very stupid when it comes to anything behind the tranny

It sounds like a posi. All posi's will cause the tire to spin in the same direction as the other. If it was open, the other tire would spin in the opposite direction. You being able to hold one and spin the other does not define what a posi does. congrats on the gift.. wish someone gave me a rear... wait that doesn't sound right...

 

i was outside messing around with the rear end, like i said earlier when i spin the yoke both spin in the same direction, but when i turn one wheel or the other, the other side moves in the op direction, i dont understand this if the code says its a posi

Just take the cover off and see what it has, very simple.

 

A fried posi will act like an open rear.... most likely you have a wasted posi.
