Power Limits

I own a 84 TA with the LG4 (150 HP and 240 lb/ft torque), and I'm switching to a 92 L98 (~240 HP and 340 lb/ft torque). I plan to swap the 84's 700R4 (27 spline) out for a 92's 700R4 (30 spline) later in the future, but I was wondering if the 84's will be able to handle that much power, and for how long. I know that if I "play nice" with the 84's, it will probably last forever, but grandma'ing the thing isn't what I want to do all the time. No dragracing or anything like that, but I do want to do some hard accelarations from time to time. Thanks for any replies.

Early 700r4 models till 87 are considerably weaker than their late 88 and up brothers. They made significant changes in the 700r4 to strengthen and repair some of the major flaws in the transmission. A quick search on 700r4 pre-88 will show you the differences. Its much better to go with a later model, and its the only way to go if you do plan on beefing up your motor as the early models aren't known for lasting under the pressure litteraly.

I do plan to swap out the tranny and rearend for a 92's, I just need the 84's to last about a year or two ($$$). Will the 92 tranny and rearend be direct bolt-ons for the 84? Thanks for any replies.

yeah I'm pretty sure you can swap out everything from the tranny back with no major complications. Since you're getting a complete tranny back set, should not be an issue with connecting to any SBC.
