Are the 1990 and up 5 speeds stronger?

I don't know hardley anythig about trannys so bear with me please.

I read on a website (don't recall which one) That 1990,1992,1993
tranny's were stronger than in the 80's.
Is this true for the 5-speed or is this just for auto's?

If it is true, is there anyway of telling what year a tranny was made form the numbers on it?

I have an 84 z-28 that needs a 5-speed, mine doesn't sound healthy right now.

Thanks all.

87 is the changeover year in these cars, actually.

Look at www.gearzone.net or www.5speeds.com for some info on identifying them. A 6-cyl trans won't work in your V8 car, but any V8 f-body one (yes, they're different from any other body) will slap right in there.
