Why does my 700R4 do this???

When I have my shifter down in 1st gear, the transmission shouldn't shift until I manually shift the lever into 2nd gear. However, when I have it down in 1st gear and I hit 5500rpms at WOT, the transmission shifts into 2nd gear on it's own. I could understand this automatic shifting if I had it in drive but not when it's down in 1st gear. I've heard the 4L60E does that but I didn't think the 700R4 did. Does anyone else have a 700R4 that does this and is it normal for a 700R4 to do that?

Another question, if it shifts itself at 5500rpm then I obviously can't rev it any higher like I want to so how do I fix it??

Its normal for it to shift like that. Its called a governor upshift, the governor is forcing the shift. You can probably change the springs in the governor or replace the governor itself with a different one. Anybody else know how?

If you want to stop this from happening remove the MTV upshift valve, toss the spring and reinstall without a spring. This will allow you to hold your transmission in any gear at any rpm. The MTV valve is the second bore small bore on the passenger side front with a visible roll pin and you can remove it without removing the valve body.

Very interesting guys. Thanks for the info. I've never done anything to the tranny other than installing it, removing it, and changing the fluid/filter so I'm not sure I want to tackle this one or not but who knows, maybe someday I'll just get out there and do it.
