700r4 tranny modulator valve?

well i was wondering how often do modulator values go out? i have a 84 trans am 305 v8 carb. im having tranny problems and all the mechanics i talk to say change that and have the tranny fluid changed first. then if that doesnt work then see about a rebuilt. my tranny surges at and after 30 mph and will continue as long as im accelerating its not a hard surge it like its going into overdrive and dropping out of over drive. any advice would be helpful to me. thanks in advance...

i believe you aren't talking to much of a mechanic if he just blindly says to try something without trouble shooting it. how about hooking up a set of preasure gauges to it and see what you have to start with.

Where's the modulator valve? Can't say I've heard of it on a 700r4...?
