trans experts please step inside

ok i have a problem with my trans. it has just started slipping here recently and i was wondering if this could have caused the probelm. i have a 700r4 and when i swapped in my motor i took out all of hte computer and since the convertr lockup is controled by the computer (didn't know that until today). could that have burned the trans up? And also i put a conertor lockup switch in today, thans to hte tech article, and when the convertor is locked i can hit hte gas and it locks for a second then it slips then it locks again. someone please help.

I don't think not having the converter lock would cause any unnecisary harm to the tranny, all it would really do is give U horrible gass mileage to the best of my knowledge... as for the slipping, even with the computer controlled lock up on my car, around 35-40 miles an hour in third gear, mine will lock and unlock, lock and unclock depending on how much throttle I give it. Usualy if I give it significant throttle pressure, it will unlock to bring the motor up in speed alittle and then lock again once it is around 45 miles per hour. does it slip when it shifts??

thats the thing, it doesn't lock and unlock. can i use the switch i put in it today to lockup the convertor for when i am running in 4th gear? and yes it does have horrible fuel mileage. and it doesn't feel like it is slipping, but when it shifts it makes a funny sound, and when i take it from park or neutrel to any gear it makes hte same sound. i checked the trans fluid and it doesn't smell burnt, but it was about a quart too full, would that cause hte problem? i am going to change the fluid and filter tomorrow and see if that helps it. sorry for bing soo long, just need help

some people on here have complained about too much fluid causing wierd shifting, but my tranny is prolly about a quart over-full, well was anyway and I didn't get any huge side effects likes slippage or anything.... I have noticed though that when I adjust my TV cable too tight that is does hold each gear for a longer period of time, because the tranny thinks you are at a higher throtle position. I think you are right that the best thing for you to do is to have the shop fix it, but I would see what U can do for yourself in the mean time with TV adjustment and the fluid level and all, and if all else fails manualy shift until U can have it fixed in 2 weeks. good luck with it, I have a few problems of my own at the moment I know how it feels

update

i changed the fluid and filter and it no longers makes the wierd sound when changeing gears and it doesn't slip as bad. Now my problem is that when i dropped hte pan i went and cleaned it out really good and hte botton of the pan was convered in black stuff (it wasn't metal thankfully). was that black stuff the clutches coming apart in the trans? i also put a lockup switch on the trans and i was wondering if it will hurt it, i don't use it until i am in 4th gear but is it still hard on the trans?

the lock up switch will only hurt the trans if you engage it in too low of a gear at too low of a speed.... my trans had a fine black powder on the bottom of the pan, but nothing too bad. Most likely the sludge was tiny little fragments of clutches and bands that normaly exhibit some wear with age and settle to the bottom... unless U have large flakes of metal and a large amount of sludge I wouldn't be too worried
