Filter seal question

I've been having problem with my new (rebuilt) tranny and today I went to put a new filter in. The old seal (actually pretty new) didn't come out with the old filter (also pretty new), so I pull it out and throw it away and then I lube up the new filter and seal and start to put it in but it didn't feel like it was going in easy enough so I pulled it back out and there was another seal on the end of it that was a black color. I've never seen one that was black, so I figure that it may have turned black over time or maybe from the trans being over heated once before in the past before I bought it and it just never got replaced. I understand that 2 seals can cause the tranny to suck air or something to that effect? I'm 99% sure that it isn't something that is supposed to be there but can someone make me 110% sure?

Thanks,
Tom

yep only one seal and all of the filters i ever took out the old seal stayed in the valve body. you have to dig and pry to get them out. i use a soft hammer and gentley tap the filter in place so the seal seats and the filter seats on the seal.

Well I got the seal situation taken care of and but now the drain plug that I installed wont clear the filter So word to the wise, don't put your drain plug in the front center portion of the pan.
