ID and buildup info..

I'm thinking of building up a modded 350 and I wanted to know of a way of knowing what transmission I have. It's an auto, and I want a stick, but don't have a lot of trans experience (or funds for that matter) to do it. Also, if I stick with the auto, what are some things to let it keep up with the engine. Thanks in advance.

Tranny ID

Heres a site that'll help.

BTW, yank the 305, plop in a 350 and enjoy the extra 45 cubes and the plethora of aftermarket stuff that goes with the bigger block. JMHO

if the tranny is original to the car, it is a 700r4 no questions asked cuz thats the only auto availible since 1984, in these cars, untill they brought out the 4l60e in the 4th gens

Hey thanks. Is there any way to tell if it's a posi? So, the 700r4 is a good trans? Also, I am planning on getting a 350 in the future though! After I get the interior and exterior fixed up. Would my current trans stand up to much more power? Should I keep my current trans and get a better stall converter?? What other ways are there to build up a trans for better performance?? I know so many questions, but I am trying to learn all I can. Thanks!!

Someone is going to tell you....

Someone is going to tell you to pull the cover and check the gears, and he would be 100% right. In the mean time you could check the code stamped on the FRONT of the RIGHT SIDE axle tube, about 3" from the carrier to cipher which gears came in that rear, ORIGINALLY. If you are POSITIVE that the rear is original you can check the code against those listed in the Haynes or Chilton books, or post them here.
