Rear out of 82-84 I4 firebird/camaro?
Well there are several of the old 2.8 v6's and a few of the old 4cyl f-bodies in the local yards and a few of them are sticks so there are some decent rear ratio's out there. I was wondering if there are any inherant problems with the rear ends and if i would be better off to by new gears, grab just the gears or get the entire rear end out of one of these cars. I mean the local yards would probably let me walk out with the entire rear end for $60 so this could be a cheap way to get some gears.

That's pretty much a plan.
The worst thing is that the 83-84 rear had the smaller axles. Other than that, it would be fine.
You might want to keep your eyes peeled for a 90-92 6-cyl stick car, those would have the bigger axles but also the better gears.
The gears wil not go on your carrier because yours is most likely a 2-series. You'd be stuck with using the older carrier and axles. If it was me, I'd either wait, or just swap the entire rear.

Ahh got it. I was just trying to think of a cheap way to get some gears in my 92 rs at some point. I will most deffinantly look for a 5spd 90-92 stick then. Thanks for the info.

Axles aren't a problem, you will more likely bust the gears before the axles. No problems with 3.73's and a locker in my 82 running stock axles--147000 miles. If you can pick a set up cheap, go for it.
