28 splines and 3 series

i have an 86 z28 with 26 spline axels. I have a friend that is going to sell me his 28 splines, i then wanted to buy the SLP posi unit. I was wondering what the difference is between 2 series and 3 series gears. Can you visibly tell? I'm pretty sure i've got 3.42's or higher, the car screams at 70. I have a 700r4. I had thought that anything over 3.08 was 3 series and anything under was 2?

Also, if i do have to replace the gears what should i choose for a car that is mainly driven in town and wants to race a little bit. I was debating on 3.73's or 3.42's if i have to change. Maybe i'm wrong but i was thinking 3.73's would be good with my motor, 355, world s/r torquers, superram, hooker headers, 9.5:1, 24lbs injectors, and 58mm tb, it's got an different cam, i just don't know the specs, but it is noticeable.

Any help on clearing me up on my gear problem and suggestions for gears would be good. I've heard good things about GM motive gears, so i think i'll go with those if i have to change, but i don't want to change if i don't have to.....budget.

the differance in carreirs is the thickness of the mounting flange nd the differance in ring gears is the gear thickness. i'd go with 3:73s
