the differential is the set of gears that converts motion from the driveshaft to the two rear wheels (it's the big thing in between the rear axles). a 'posi' is a TYPE of differential. with a normal differential, if one rear wheel is spinning, you won't move forward. with a posi (positraction, or limited-slip), the differential transfers power to the wheel with the most traction, so you can still move if one rear tire is spinning. if you want the strongest, most enthusiasts swear by a 12-bolt moser, but it's not cheap. the 9-bolt Borg Warner was stock on some 3rd gens. it's not quite as strong as the 12-bolt, but is a lot less expensive.
