gears PROBLEM

My 91 camaro rs with tbi has 82,000 miles on it and i am hearing a clunk in the rearend so i think my rearend is going. How much does it cost to rebuild a rearend or get a new one??? I wouldnt be rebuilding it myself. My car is an automatic and came stock with 2.73 gears. Would running say 3.23 or 3.42 increase my 1/4 mile by alot?

You may be mistaking a broken tranny mount for a "rearend clunk". Get under the car and look at the tranny mount and see if it looks cracked. Sometimes you can't tell by looking, so jack up on the tranny and see if it seperates. Very common problem.

if you're hearing a clunking noise right when you start moving after putting the car in gear, it may be the driveshaft u-joints gone bad. they tend to do that in high mileage cars & it's probably the easiest to fix. the driveshaft is held on by 4 bolts & a u-joint is $8 a piece at autozone. i'd replace both just to be on the safe side. if you jack up the frame & put it in neutral & spin the driveshaft with your hands, you might get a better idea of where the noise is coming from

while you are looking at the ujoints and tranny mount also look at the torque arm mount, lots of things can cause a clunk could be a broken exhaust hanger making the exhaust bang the car, look for shiny spots where something could be rubbing too. Usually if you are hearing a clunking sound coming from the differential, you've already blown a tooth or several off a gear. Have you been hearing a high pitch whine or hum from the rear?
