i'm thinking of swapping an '84 305 (manual tranny in donor) into my 83' 2.8L. The tranny on the 305 is screwed. Will the automatic transmission, and torque converter on the 2.8 work with the 305? Also, Will the flywheel on the 305 work with the tranny? If not will the 2.8 fluwheel bolt onto the 305?? my dad thinks manual and auto trany's need different flywheels, is this the case?

I don't know the parts compatibility between tranny parts on a v6 and a v8, try a little research on this board.

However, the 'flywheels' do not interchange between manuals and autos. A manual transmission has a big disk of metal with a flat surface on one side (the clutch will be pressed against this). An automatic has a flexplate which has some holes in it. Its thinner and lighter, and the torque converter bolts to this. Check www.summitracing.com and search for flexplate and flywheel to see the difference.

The bolt pattern on the back of the engine is different, so the trans will not bolt to it. A manual uses a flywheel, an auto uses a flex plate. They're completely different, except they bolt into the same place. The bolt pattern on the back of the crank is different, so the 6-cyl flex plate will not bolt to the V8 motor. The TC might be the same. But since you have to get a V8 trans anyway, get a fresh converter for it.
