torque converter recommendations

hey guys i have a 305 tpi with headers and exhaust, LPE 214/224 cam, 3.23 gears, ported plenum and air foil(hopefully soon i will port my base) the car has run a best of 14.8 @ 93mph. i know there is a better ET in the car if i could launch it hard but it is a turd under 2000rpm (2.2 60ft with no tire spin) i know i need a higher stall converter (about 2200rpm stall) but am unable to decide which one to get. i have heard good things about the 9.5in vigilante, but it is too expensive and i think it is a little more serious than what i need. i also saw some less expensive converters by precision industries with 2500rpm stall. i also have seen some converters by huges and atc. which converter would best suit my needs? i am going to install a trans go shift kit when i install the converter. thanks for all your help

Try the A.C.T. 9.5" torque converter. It is almost identical to the Vig but at a lower price $565.00. Call me if I can be of help? You can check out the A.C.T. TC at www.actperformance.com and look up the 9.5" MAG. This TC can drop your ET anywhere from .25-.40 seconds or more in some cases.

With your setup I wouldent use anything over a 2k stall. An 1800 stall converter should be plenty after all you want the converter to stall below peak tq.

hey there SSC i have to disagree with you, i have an ACT 9.5" 2400 stall on my stock 350, and it is definately NOT too much stall. he's got a little 305 with a bigger cam than my 350, so his motor is much more of an RPM motor and could tolerate even more stall than I have and work better with it.

unless you've driven a small 9.5" converter, it's really hard to believe they work as well as they do. My uncle (who is familiar with the old slippery high stall converters) rode in my 91 Z and was completely suprised by how drivable it was, he didn't think it even had a converter until i "demonstrated" it to him

thanks for the replies guys. yah, my motor doesnt really get mean till about 2000rpm. i need to port my intake base and get a different set of heads too. but i am a poor college student and i dont have much money at my disposal for hotrods. i really think a converter like that would really help my ET out, but they are so expensive. i guess you get what you pay for.

I was fairly recently a poor college student too. it sucks, but hang in there, college is worth it!

as for the converters, it's probably worth the time it will take to save up and get it, unless you need a converter right now due to a failure of the one you have.

if you cant get one of the good quality 9.5" converters because they are just flat out too expensive, but still want to do something, get one of the s-10/vette converters.. they are 12" but stall around 2000 or more depending on power. in the long run if you keep looking for every last tenth, you'll probably end up with a 9.5" anyways, so your decision...
