transmission rebuild?
took my car to the shop.., i lost D and OD the other day, when i first start driving, they work, then as soon as i hit like say..3500 rpm's..drive or overdrive started slipping and didnt work again.., the trans. fluid smells like its burning.., and the shop i took it to said 3rd gear is gone, and they want 1600 for a rebuild, i still have first ,reverse and 2nd gear though, could i just buy some aftermarket gears and instal those to replace the ****ty stock ones that dont work?

Has nothing to do with gears, more like paper glued to steel.
The price seems steep unless he will swap it and gice you a 1yr warranty (in writing)
Talk to pro-built. Just replacing the worn parts won't fix why they wore out in the first place.

You lost the clutch pack which is not all that unusual. Joel is correct when he says you might want to get a swap. Prices around my area run about $1200-$1800 for a total overhaul with the addition of shift improving components and check out the guy's rep before spending any cash. Local speed shops many times can steer you in the direction of a good trans guy since they get to talk to a lot of people who put hard use on thier boxes.
Very rarely to the "gears" go out. More than likely, the 3-4 clutches are burnt up. Your best bet is to get a tranny from somebody like Dana at Pro-built.
First of all, he can get you a tranny for less than the quoted $1600
Second, if you do go to the local tranny shop and pay the $1600, I can tell you that 75% of the people who work there don't give a crap about your car or the tranny, they just want to rebuild it and "beat the book", so who knows what kind of short cuts and cheap parts they will use. People like myself and Dana strive to make these transmissions last as long as possible. That means using top quality parts and working to "fix" the transmission, not put a band-aid on it.
I have been back into "local" rebuilds, and I have gone back into "aftermarket" transmissions as well, but I have yet to even hear anything bad about a Pro-Built. I think the choice is obvious.
