Some people are using LT1 starters just fine. They are supposedly smaller, less affected by the heat off headers because they are further away from the headers, and have more torque. Some are using thirdgen starters. I am using my original starter from an auto, and it works fine.

If you have a 305, then you can reuse the starter. I went from auto to T-56 and the starter fit perfect.
If you have a 350, you will need a different starter.

I just went from a auto to T56 in a 91 350 and the bellhousing would not fit over the starter nose cone, but a little sanding inside the bellhousing with a sanding roll and it seems to work fine. Some use the LT-1 but it is $$$. Good luck

Well, that answers my question too. In the interest of doing it right the first time, I am going with a Mini Torque starter.
