question about my auto tranny

Ok, so I have an automatic transmission on my '83 Trans Am. When I put it in park, the car still moves (even with the parking break on). I bought this car as a project, and it doesn't even start yet, but I'm wondering what I should be checking for to see if this problem is fixable. What might be wrong, and how do I go about fixing this?

make sure that when you put the shifter in park the tranny is actually getting to park

If the source of the trans is unknown, the parking pawl maybe broken and the rear brakes are probably worn out also.
