Marking compound and coast side.
Marking compound and coast side pics.
Hi all, when marking compound is applied to several sides of both the coast and drive side of my ring gear is it normal for contact only to be made on one side at a time for the same rotation? If I rotate the ring one way it marks on one side, if I rotate the ring the other way it marks on the other side. I have it set to a backlash of 10 and my coast mark is perfect and my drive mark is centered in depth but slightly toward the toe with no runoff. Any help appreciated. Pics of marks on the way. Thank you.
The missing areas on the toe side are like that to allow a 4.10 gear to work with the zexel diff. from slp. I spoke to their tech line and there is no paddle kit for the $99 diff. The only way to make it work is to file this area down. He assured me that this will not affect the gear strength, sure.

sounds right to me, they should only have full contact on the side preasure is applied to, the back lash is clearance between gears so if you have .010 BL the "slack" is taken out on one side only when you spin it. the contact pattern is the last and least thing i worry about, if you have all the other numbers right the contact will be also
yes, but
All the numbers are correct and the pattern seems ok but while driving it makes a roaring noise. I have pulled out the diff 3 times today and adjusted the BL each time with no change in the noise. all the bearings are new and the shims are new. If all of my numbers are correct there should be no way that it roars while maintaining constant speed and slightly while accelerating. I don't know. Thank you. Jeff.

Uggg the pics are down.
Usually a roaring sound means the pinion is too far into the mesh. Rear end work sure is fun. You should get the pattern on both sides durring a rotation its just one will be more pronounced then the other. Your backlash should be between 4-8. If your getting contact near the end of the toe this also indicates the pinion is too far into the mesh. IF you can get the link working again I can probably direct your effort a little further I just got a new book with about "12" acceptable gear patterns and tons of problems & solutions kinda like a "diffs for dips."

I've been going through gear patterns all week, I just havn't installed the diff. yet.
I've been all over the scale with this sucker, but we'll get it (I HOPE)
Heres the link where we've been discussing it all week
Everybody's welcome on over!!!

Oh yea, I couldn't get a good pattern on both sides buy just turning it one way. I rotate it both way for over 5 rotation each.
