Can a T5 be rebuilt to handle more power?

I have a T5 tranny in my 1991 RS. I was told I could get the same one rebuild with stronger components to handle the likings of a larger HP engine. What do you guys know and think?

No. Not really possible.

The weak points about the T-5 are the thicknes of the case, and the sizes of the gears, and the diameters of the shafts. Pretty hard to upgrade things like that.

"Rebuilding" a manual trans consists of taking it apart, cleaning the parts, replacing wornm or damaged hard parts, and re-assembling it with new bearings and other "soft" parts. The bearings are all the same (same size hole on the case, same size shaft they ride on) so there's no upgrade possible there.

If it's the later style (87 up in these cars) you can get a reinforced bearing retainer for the rear of the countergear, that helps a little.

www.gearzone.net for the rear CG bearing retainer
