V6 3.42 Posi specs

I'm thinking of swapping to a v6 rear, its 3.42 posi supposedly, I'd rather keep my 3.23 richmond gears and just pop in the posi unit from the v6 are they compatible? Same series, spline etc?

V6 rears very, very rarely came with a posi. But we'll assume for a minute that this one did.

Your car came with either 2.73s or 3.08s. If you used the original carrier and your 3.23s are the special 3-series gears that are made to fit a 2-series carrier, then you cannot swap, period. If your existing carrier (the one with the 3.23s currently on it) is a 3-series, then those gears will at least bolt to a 3-series posi.

Your car is a 88. So it has 26-spline axles. If the posi in question also has 26-spline axles (89 back) then it will work. If it has 28-spline axles (mid-89 up) it will not work.

As you can see, you haven't given enough info to predict accurately whether it will work.

Confused?

I'm buying this V6 Camaro with another member, for $200 where we split it $100, but I get the rear out of it. The thing is it's an 88 V6 and I haven't seen it yet, but he's been running the rpo codes through and the posi option came up and its a stick v6 meaning 3.42. I just have no clue on v6 options.

When I busted my 2.73's, I was able to pop in these 3.23 richmond gears from a friend's monte carlo with no issue save for a bit of whine since putting them in. They have a good 40 launches with me plus his 11, 11 sec launches too and I've been happy with the gears and performance. I don't really want to change rear ends altogether, don't have the equipment at the moment nor any help so I figured a differential swap as a good quicker, easier change but before I go and change it I need to know if its possible.

So far here's soem details, stick v6 with 3.42 and posi and its an 88.

I've got an 88 auto original 2.73 now 3.23 gears, no change save for gears.

I'm gonna try and get the complete rpo code list and verify this for myself, jack the rear end up do the quick posi test to be certain. Then see what else I can take from this.

Worse case scenario, I change out rear ends completely since both have drum brakes, its an easy change.
