If an engine can't rev to 5000 then there's something wrong with it. Just about any engine should have no problems reaching 5000 rpm and surviving. Getting closer to 6000 and you should have some better internal parts. 7000 and there's not much left that's from the factory.

The rpm range depends completely on the engine itself. Can choice, induction system, heads etc all determine the rpm range of the engine.

Gear ratio's again depend on the rpm range of the engine but also depend on the tire size. 3.73 gears are middle of the road for performance. An engine that revs higher would like 4.10's but would also need taller tires.

this should be an interesting thread.. heh

I dont see 5k rpm being good for an engine with like over 100k original miles on it though, heh

rod knock, cough cough&*

I've run mine up to 6,000 and a couple times beyond by accident and the motor still runs just fine but then, it only has about 15k on it :lala: Normally shifted at 5,200 - 5,500. Can't wait to see what the single plane does for the top end I just bought for cheap.

I had the 700r4 with Coan 2800 stall and 3.42 gear, consistent 1.95 60' times and 14.1 E.T.'s crossing finish line 4400 rpm.
Now with the TH350, 3500 stall, 3.42 gear(killing me) bigger carb also My short times are consistent 1.82 and E.T.'s are 13.6
I shift every gear out at 6000rpm and at the big end I only cross around 45-4600 rpm/ hence me wanting taller gear/tire combo.
