what stall convertor?

Wondering what stall convertor would be the best for me. The motor is and L98 with something along the lines of a ZZ9 cam, headers, bolt ons and a rear end ratio of 3.70. I was thinking something around 2800. Not too extreme, but enough to notice off the line and in the "butt dyno". What do you guys think?

2800 should be nice. I went with a 2400 and now regret that I didn't go higher.

How do you like the 2400? How wil the 2800 do on the highway? One more question, what are your 60 ft. times? Thanx.

The 2400 I have is barely noticeable. I'd swear it was a stock converter, except when I data log runs at the track you can see the rpms are consistently 2400 or so. On the highway the 2800 will be the same as stock as long as you get a lockup. Once the torque converter clutch engages, there is zero slippage. My 60 ft times are fairly consistent between 1.81 and 1.87. I plan on getting a 9" 3800 stall very soon though.

so what do you think of a 3000 or so. It seems the 2800 may be too mild (?).

Rule of thumb is to have your stall speed around 500 rpm under your peak torque rpm. With a fairly tame/close to stock motor a 2800 would be good. If you've moved the power band of the motor up from stock, then going to a 3000 or 3200 may be a better choice. What rpm do you make peak torque at?

Still not sure. Haven't put the motor together yet and dyno'd it. I wanted to do the TC at the same time I did the motor, since it'll be apart anyway. Maybe what I should do is put the motor in the car and dyno it then figure out where I stand and what convertor to use. What do you think? Thanks for your help!

Well, what components are you using to build the motor? Which heads, cam, intake, compression?

2800 should be almost perfect. You don't want anything higher with TPI, even with extreme mods. They aren't high RPM motors, and make excellent torque down low.

BTW - What's up with your car? First I hear about and LS1 swap. Then it's for sale!? Then I see you want to do an L98 swap?

Well the reason it was up for sale is b/c i was going to buy a GTA, but that fell through. Then I was gonna do the LS1 thing, but I got my hands on a cheap L98 with low miles. So that's what I'm doing now. I decided the car would have to be off the road too long to be able to do the LS1, so I gave up on that. Plans now are L98, stock heads, Lingenfelter cam, headers, convertor and a few bolt ons. Looking for low to mis 13's. i havent seen ya around much lately. where 'ya been?

I've been meaning to stop by but between work and the weather and other things I've been busy lately. I will stop by sometime soon, I swear! Just let me install my new rear first.

BTW - Do you already have the TPI setup for that motor? I do have a polished TPI setup I will be putting up for sale soon.

Just out of curiousity what is the stall on a stock converter? I am debating on indluding this with my LS1 4L60E swap

Thanks.
P.S. Nasty_Bird_'90 sorry you gave up on the LS1 swap. You should be able to nuts with that L98 for less $.

Thats cool Marc. Just shoot me an email when you decide to stop by. Maybe we can go rice hunting or something over on Ritchie Hwy.. I already have the TPI for it. I just sold a polished setup myself! When I decided to do the LS1, I sold it for $550, now i have to start over with the one i have now. . Oh well, no biggie.

I would have liked to have done the LS1, but like I said, the car would have been off the road too long. I WILL do it eventually, but i may find a V6 car or a shell and go from there. That way it wont matter how long it takes. I'm not looking for much out of the L98, just 13.30's on the motor, 12. 99 on the juice

I think the stock stall speed on the cars is around 1100-1500 or somewhere in there.
