Posi Rear how to identify by looking at it!

Guys...I have a rear end in the garage....and I cant figure out if it has posi or not (partly because this is the first Time I have actually cracked one myself). By looking at it how can I tell if its got posi or not, well other than pulling the Axle code which is caked in crap....pics would be usefull too.

Thanks Dave

BTW I know its a 10 bolt with 3:42 out of an 87 GTA...dont know if that will help

Thanks

yep it's that easy look for the clutch pack after you pull the cover. lot of people will tell you to spin this and count that but it's not 100% for sure like pulling the cover.

Unless the gears have been changed, that ratio is incorrect. The GTA's in 87 equipped with the 10 bolt got either 2.73, 3.08, or 3.23. 3.42 was not available.

Yep, the gears were changed...figured that one out last night. Formerly a 3:23 axle

Changed from a 3.23 to 3.42? That's odd. That's a good bit of money for that little extra gearing...

That picture curt86iroc put up is a posi diff. You should be able to notice the springs and clutches. The open unit only has 4 spider gears and a shaft in the diff.

ya thats what I thougth about about the change for something so small.....but the ring gear has it 3:42 stamped right on it and the pinion gear has X:42 on in I cant see the first nubmer all that well but I figure it is a 3:42....does this make sense?

And I am positive it does not have posi now.

Thanks Guys

You sure it's stamped 3:42? Does it look like this? (sorry so big, too lazy to shrink it)

Thats 13:42 or 3.23 gears ( :== /, 42/13 = 3.23:1). The numbers represent the number of teeth. 13 on the pinion, 42 on the ring. The ratio is the ratio. Imagine that! Thats also why higher numerical gears can be weaker. Less teeth on the pinion make it smaller.

In case you're wondering, thats the POS eaton locker i have in my car right now. I swapped in a whole 84/85 axle, the eaton lockers were really used in the S10 line, but f-bodies got them in that period because of a shortage of auburns. And actually at first i thought they were 3.42s too, until i realized the colon, the worn out 1, and the logic of the situation.

That is exactly what I have right down to the p/n on the ring gear...So I guess they are not 3:42 and actually the 3:23 gears then, but I dont think mine is a posi...It does not look like that and I dont see any springs etc...all and all a good deal for 50 bucks canadian, even without posi I would say.

Thanks
