What's the best 6-speed for up to 400 HP and 500 FT/LB torque? (T-56,aftermarket,etc)
SubscribeTell me what you guys think:
I'm going to buil my L98 til it has about 400 HP and somewhere between 450 and 550 torque. That includes a 75-100 shot of Nitrous eventually and various mods. So here's a few questions:
1) What 6-speed should I buy? I was inclined to get a 94-97 OEM T-56 but heard that they're not that strong. Will I regret doing this? I'm starting to question myself.
2) What's the best type or brand of clutch to use? This isn't for all-out racing but I want it and the tranny to hold up to some red-light drags if you know what I mean.
3) Should I get a better flywheel? If so, which one?
4) What differential gear ratio should I use?
Sorry for all the questions, but I think you'll all understand that I want to do this thing right! Thanks!

(1) The 94-97 OEM is just as up-to-the-task as the aftermarket.
(2)McLeod Dual friction or Centerforce Dual Friction. The later is a cool $150 more for no real gain.
(3)The centerforce is machined from steel and is SFI certified. Also 35lbs, good for drag racing. They also have a light aluminum wheel for out of the corner accels. McLeod's are also good.
(4) With the deep .50 overdrive at least 3.73 or better. I have 4.10's and the highway is no problem at all. Just alot of light to light shifting (Makes the gears very close) I usually start in 2nd and shift right to 4th (Or 1,3,5) Going deep will make 1st a hard pull and reduce the likelyhood of ever even using 6th (and kill performance).
The weakest link in these are the stock clutch. A little spray and the disk will just slip and burn away. The richmond R.O.D. 6 is rated the same as the 94-97 oems. The Tremec 5 is another strong alternative, but the oem 6 sp is still less expensive used.

The T56 holds fine with my 383. The Mcleod clutch is a good clutch to use and will hold alot of power. The T56 is a smoother tranny than the Tremec TKO's i've driven. smoother shifting.
If I get a used 93-97 T-56, which one should I choose, because I know they have different ratios. Which ratio is best, and why?
94-97 is the stronger and has a .50 4th gear
93 is rated at 50 lbs/ft less and is less friendly with steep (numerically high) rear gears, but actually has better ratios for auto xing.
Not sure what is different between the two to make the 93 weaker!?

you mean 6th gear has a .50 overdrive.

the lower the gear ratio the weaker it inhearently becomes.
