hehehe.. if anyone needs posi its me. I cant even touch the gas w/o spinning them. Damn open 2.73 rear end, i hate it. Id say get a different rear only if you want better gearing. I dont think wheel spin is as much of a problem w/ the V6's as it is w/ the v8's but if you want a little more umph out of your ride then a good rear w/ a posi carrier and 3.73's would be worth it.

if you want to get a rear, check the local junk yards and see if you can find something that is still in good shape. Its definatly doable to put one in if you have some help. I dont think its too feasable to manuver that heavy chunk of steel and cast iron by yourself.

I know it's been said before, but the $99 Zexel unit from SLP has got to be the best deal going. Adidas-this will bolt right into your 90 if you have 3.23 or lower (numerically higher) gear ratio. It will also fit into 82 to 89 by using the newer 28 spline axles from 90 and up rear end. Again, this posi needs to have a 3.23 or higher gear to fit. I ordered my posi from SLP, along with a new rear cover with a drain plug today. Can't wait to replace my 3.08's with auburn posi with my 3.42's and the zexel.

You have to have at least 3.23 gear for this to fit. It won't work with a 2.73 or 3.08. You can verify your gear ratio by pulling the cover and counting the teeth on the ring gear, then counting the teeth on the pinion (small gear in the front of the housing) then diving the number of the pinion teeth into the ring gear teeth. Or possibly look up your car option numbers and type them into the 3rd gen RPO deconder and do it that way.

This is a bolt in, but needs to be done by someone that knows what they are doing. If you aren't changing gears and just bolting the posi in, you have to set the back lash when putting the new posi unit in. This shouldn'ttake a good shop more than 1 hour to do. Make some calls and ask how much to install a posi in your car. I've read for a full new gear install it's around $150. For just a posi it should be about half that or less.

no offense bro, but u really didnt answer my question. ok, so if i have the 3.23 gearset and i bolt this on or get a shop to do it, i will have the posi trac rear then? or would i need to do something else? and if i dont have the 3.23 gearset, i need to put on a new rear end that is of the 3.23 gear and THEN i can bolt on the part?

Ok, This is a posi unti. It's much better than the one that came in 3rd gen cars. You will have a posi after you install this.

If you rear end has 3.23 gears or higher, it will bolt in with professional help. No other changes are necessary. If you have higher gears (2.72/3.08) you will have to change your gear set, or buy another rear end with a 3.23 or higher gear. These are very common in wrecking yards. They came in 6cyl cars. I bought a 3.42 that looks like it only has 10,000 miles on it for $70. You can use a rear end end from any 82-92 car with 3.42 gears, and use your 28 spline axles from your car and it will all bolt together.

Depending on what your gear ratio is now, if you put the posi in without changing gears, no changes to the speedo are necessary. If you do change gears, you will have to change the speedo gear to match the new gear set.

If you have a 2.73 or 3.08 and go to a 3.42, you will see a difference in acceleration. But you will also be turning more rpm's when driving. This will probably affect your gas milage slightly, but not too much. Unless with the new gears and posi you have your foot stuck to the floor. I got 20.39 mpg when I filled up last night with my 87 305 tpi 5spd car. I'm guessing I'll probably drop 1/2 to 1 mpg with the 3.42's. But I don't mind.

With your 3.1, you probably already have 3.42 in the rear. Like I said, use the RPO decoder to see what you have. The sticker on my car is in the console. I just wrote all the numbers down and typed them into the decoder. Worked like a charm. Told me I have 3.08's.

what if the only thing on your car identifying it is the vin number all other plates have been removed/lost?

dejavue-If all the tags are lost, then you have no choice but to pull the sheet metal cover on the rear end and count the teeth on the ring and pinion. You take the ring gear (example 41 teeth on ring gear, 12 teeth on pinion) You take 41 and divide it by 12. Which equals 3.416, or rounded off 3.42.

As far as axle spline count, 90 and newer have 28 spline. I've read on here that some 89's have 28 spline, but have yet to find an 89 with 28 spline.

Hope this helps.
