Put in new convertor, now I have a question

I just put in a 9.5" 2800 stall convertor last night. It's ok, but when I'm in "D", it seems like it doesn't want to shift out of 1st. The revs stay way up around 3 grand and it doesn't shift. If I shift it manually, it's fine, nice shift. What gives? TIA.

Could be the TV is sticking for some reason, although 3k would be pretty low for that to be the problem. The first time i put my big *** tranny cooler on my TV stuck on me. Not sure if a boogie or something came from my new lines/cooler and jammed in the TV, or if somehow an air pocket got formed. Car was shifting like it was WOT all the time. First thought the governor was messed up, but i swapped it and no change. Played with the TV cable for a few minutes and found that it was stuck and got it to unstick. No more problem.

Of course, are you sure what it is diong is abnormal. With my 3k stall if i'm into the pedal anywhere past granny level my engine won't really spend any time below 3k rpms. And mine is a fairly tight vigilante. A generic 2800 stall could easily be even looser than mine at part throttle making it seem like it's hanging the shift.

Well, I made some observations today. It seems like it hesitating to shift into 2nd, but it really isnt. It shifts into 2nd at 20 mph, then 3rd at about 30mph. I think it just felt weird at first because the motor was revving out higher than it usually did. I'm not sure if I like the convertor. It killed my gas mileage. I think I'm gonna have it tightened up a bit, maybe to around 2400.

MDForm: It wasn't bad at all. I have access to a lift at work so that made it pretty easy, plus I do probably close to half a dozen tranny removals/installs in a weeks time at work so that helps. . As far as unbolting the tranny, it's not hard once you get the torque arm and drive shaft out of the way. Drop the tranny crossmember to buy yourself some room and use a 14mm swivel socket on the end of a 1 foot extention and air gun to remove the bottom four. For the top two, I like to use a 3ft extension and come in from the back of the tranny, all the way back by the tail shaft. It makes life very easy. Let me know if you need some time on the lift, I may be able to hook you up some time.

i have heard good things about the 9.5" ACT 2800 Stall converter. I have heard it stalls like a stock stall converter with little throttle (saving fuel) but when you nail it, it shoots up and sends you forward. is this true? also, with lockup, does the ACT like to lockup really early? is that bad for it?
