what would the ideal auto trans be?

trying to figure out if building a 700-r4 to hold close to 600 horsepower is practicle and doable or if i should look into other automatic transmissions.

the car will be used mostly for street uses with the ocassional track time and freeway travel is possible; but not frequent.

what do you guys recommend.....

Pick up the latest issue of Car Craft. They talk about different automatic GM trannies and you can see why the 700R4 is considered weak. If you think you're going to produce that much power then go with a TH400.

If you're going to produce that much HP I doubt even a tranny with an OD will give good gas mileage.

well i'm not looking for good gas mileage from a tranny, more or less somewhat smooth operation. just want to know what the difference will be in how it runs and feels as a mild built one would be.

i know a manual would be the best bet in most cases, but i don't want a manual. where can i find information on the other types of transmissions and what all is involved to make them work?
