Rear End Swap
Rear End Swap
Hi all,
recently me and a friend purchase a 84 camaro for parts and found it to have 3:42's.
Basically I have 2:73'S in my 87 Bird.
He has 3:08's in his 91RS.
We want to put the 3:42's in the 91RS and the 3:08's in the 87 Bird.
The question is are we going to run across any unexpected problems. There seems to be none we are aware of and I knew the place to go for the answers.:hail:
Thank you all in advance!

shouldn't be any problenms with the rears fitting ,swap the whole rear, not just the gear sets, lot easier. i'm sure you'll encounter unexpected problems, that's the nature of doing this.

like ede says its much easier to just swap the whole rears, the only serious hassle you may run into is if one of the cars has disc brakes
if you dont want to do that then you need to 1) take 3.42 from 84 off put gears on 28 spline carrier from 91, install set preload and back lash (always fun) 2) take 3.08 from 91 and place on 3 series 26 spline carrier from the 84, put in 87 set preload and back space (again fun stuff) 3) use the empty rear end for an ashtray

Nope both cars have drum brakes. And yes we are planning on changing the entire rear.
Is it just a matter of supporting the car and then removing the control arms, drive line, brake lines and springs? Then moving rears and bolting everything back up?

rear end is held on by the LCA's (1 bolt each side) the shock absorbers (1 bolt each side) and the torque arm (2 big **** bolts)and pinion yoke (4 small bolts)plus the sway bar (if you have it, 4 bolts on rear plus 1 each side for end links)panhard bar (1 bolt to the rear IIRC) and the panhard brace (cant remember if it actually bolts to the rear). Plus unhooking the brake lines and e brake cables. its a bolt on deal
hmmm while you're at it and have the rear end all apart, you might as well put in new LCA bushings, panhard bar bushings, sway bar bushings and endlinks...that is if it hasnt already been done recently.

Success!!
Well everyone,
We were able to complete out rear end swap.
Everything went like we figured, i want to again thank those of you who gave us things to look for.
I would like to state that if anyone is thinking of doing this in the future. I suggest taking a can of wd-40 or something and squirt down the nuts and bolts. Our nemises was the damn, sway bar ARGH! And the fact that it was 20 - 30 degrees outside on that concrete driveway.
