Driveshaft Slip Yoke / Tailhousing

This is a 1988 V8 T5 from a TBI F-body. I just rebuilt it recently, it has zero miles.

I went to put the alum. driveshaft into my car. It kinda goes in a
little bit, but nowhere near enough. I push it in a little further, and
then it takes effort to get it out. It's definitely not going in there
smoothly like every other GM shaft I've ever worked on.

I also tried the old steel shaft with the same yoke that's been on it for 3 years. Nope, same thing. Okay so it's the tranny somehow. I took the speedo drive gear & sleeve out, same thing.

Basically I would have to get a prybar to get it into the tranny any
farther. It's not close to getting the u-joint into the pinion yoke.

The tailhousing went on nice and even when it got put on. The only thing I can see is the wrong tailhousing output shaft bushing??? It definitely took effort to get the bushing into the tailhousing, but how much would bind me up?

I don't see how it could be anything else, like an internal item in the tranny pushing on the shaft. When it was not in the car, the input and output shafts spun freely just like they should, not dragging on anything. I didn't change the tailhousing, didn't change the output shaft, the speedo gear is on there where it's supposed to be just like before.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Matthew

i'd suspect the bushing from what you've said.

Well, I pulled the tranny last night, and tried the yoke on it. SOS. Pulled the tailhousing, & it slipped onto the output shaft no problem, but it wasn't going into the housing, so I drove the bushing out. Good luck to me finding one on sunday. Maybe I'll just use a "seasoned" one out of a 700-R4 tail I have lying around.

I had the same problem with a TH400 tailhousing bushing. It
was so tight that my yoke wouldn't begin to go in. I still have the
problem since I just got another housing. I might have my machinist hone it to fit if the price is right. I was told that this is
not uncommon with aftermarket bushings, but I don't remember
having any problems with TH350 tail bushings.

Picked up a GM bushing today. PN 24207915. Might try & pop it in gently w/ a block of wood, might go use a press.

Bushing went in perfectly. Slip yoke went in the tailhousing at that point fine, so I reassembled, and it's perfect.
