Changing 5th gear in a WC T5

Ok, I'm gonna show my complete lack of experience with trannies here. I want to put a lower 5th gear in my WC T5. My old non WC T5 would cruise at around 2500 at 75 but my new WC T5 turns like 3000 rpm at the same speed. I am assuming the new one has like a .71 gear and my old one had .63 or so.

So anyway it looks to me like changing the 5th gear is not that bad from looking at pics. Looks like it is very accessible. I assume I would also have to use a drive gear that goes with it since it would have a larger diameter. Has anyone done this here?

I've never felt the need to change the ratio, but I've taken off and put on quite a number of 5th gears.

You have to change both halves of the gear. You're right, it's not too hard, you can do it without tearing the whole thing down if you're careful and lucky. You have to take off the cover, punch the pin out of the shifter rail, take off the ext housing, pull the speedo drive gear, remove a couple of snap rings; the 5th drive gear comes right off the back of the countergear, the 5th driven gear is a bit more hassle, you may need a really deep-throated puller for that.

The good transmissions (L69 & LB9) have the .76 ratio, the low-perf ones LG4 & L03) have the .63. If you do this, and you don't want the .76 gear set any more, and you get it off without damage and it's still good, I'd like to have it.
