The sweet smell may not be gas. Your transmission filter may be loose, and you could be smelling some tranny fluid coming up through the dipstick. Drive the car for a while (under a little load) and then take out the dipstick and see if there is a smell coming up from the pan (mainly the smell you are looking for). It's not impossible.
