Okay, got some 28 Spline Axles. Now what?
Got em today. What else do i need? I know i Need the SLP posi unit, and the SLP gears. Im going with 3.42s for now.
But somone mentioned there are better gears than SLP?
And somone mentioned an "Install Kit" DO i need that?
Im not doing it myself, My trusty shop is. Im goina watch though...
But will they need anything else besides those 3 things?

buy the install kit, check with raytec or something like that, do a search here it'll come up in a thread. lot of people use the s0olid spacer, i never have. i like richmond gear sets, but they are or tend to make more noise than others.

Smurfin-Here is a link to an ebay auction that ended not too long ago. There were two sets of axles up for auction, and he only sold one set. You might email the seller and see if he still has the other set for sale.

These are not hard to find. Try the sponsors at the top of the page, they all had some last time I checked, and some even for $75 pair.

Whats that mean? Is this somthing I need to tell the guy who installs my axles?

That means he's labeled them as to which side of the car they came off of so you can re-install them on the same side to keep the stress in the same direction of rotation.
In theory I guess it might make a difference on a top fuel dragster, but probably won't matter at all on a car like ours. But, it couldn't hurt to keep them on the same side as they came off of.

If an axle is used, and you put it on the opposite side of the car, effectively changing the direction of twist....it will probably snap in two fairly easily.
not that i have ever tried that before

So how do i tell which is driver and which is passenger side axles? is there a mark on them? I have them, cant see anything marking anything.

Not meaning to disagree with anyone or start a flame war, but I own a machine shop and work with things like this all the time. If the axle came out of a car used with drag slicks, then maybe it might matter. But since you have no clue as to which side they came out of, you have a 50% chance of being right when you put them in. There really isn't any way to tell which side they came out of, so I wouldn't worry about it. If I had my preference I would put them in the same side they came out of just because. It's no extra effort to do so, and it couldn't hurt anything to do it this way.
I bought my axles the same way with not knowing which side the came out of, and have around 2000 miles on them now with some pretty hard stop light to stop light runs on the 3.42 rear I swapped in and no problems yet with the rear, zexel, or axles.
Anyway just in case I ever do have a problem with my zexel, I just ordered a spare from SLP. They are not making camaro's anymore and the supply of cheap zexel's from SLP will dry up quickly. I'm not sure if repair parts are available for them, but I'm sure if they are it would cost more than the $99 SLP is getting for them to fix a broken zexel. I also finally got ahold of another set of 28 spline axles so I think I'm going to build up the spare 3.23 rear I have for my car, and might even do a tech article on the zexel install since there is so much interest in them.

It really does matter which side they go in...its got to do with metallurgy really. its really fairly complicated.... but to vastly oversimplify....
if the axles were in a car for a long time....they "get used to" turning a certain way....and develop a certain minute amount of twist that is not really evident except at a microscopic level....if you change this direction it is like bending a piece of steel one way....then the other way.....at that very least, it becomes alot less strong. and is more prone to breakage.

wouldn't swapping from side to side in effect relieve some of the built up stress? just for the hell of it why not run it on ansysis or something similar. i might give it a try if i get bored at work and see what it tells me.

I completely agree it would be best to put the axle back in with the same rotation they were running, but like me he has no clue as to what side they came out of. So, since there is nothing either of us can do about it, why worry about it?
I would be very interested in seeing the results of a stress analayss.

yep i've been thinking about it a bit more and think i'll try to simulate it with anysis program. for speed and simplicity i'll make up some numbers and diameters since i don't have an axle to measure. not very good with anysis so i may not get any where and it's not exactialy something i can ask for help with, since it's not really work related, other than me praticing with the program.

The major dia. of the splines is 1.200. Count is 28. Minor dia. (root of the spline) is 1.134. Axle diameter just past the splines is 1.225. Then this goes up to 1.400 for 2.25 inches at the bearing race. Length of the axle (not including the c-clip groove and wheel mounting flange) is 28.750. Overall lenght of the axle is 31 inches.

ya it would relieve the stress....but the material would be fatigued from that, so its not like you twisted it one way, and then it goes back to its original state when you twist it the other way.....a stress analysis would be interesting to see
383
383
ok i run it but not sure i believe my results, especially since i don't know or understand the program much. basically it shows no residual stress with 200 ft/lbs of torque, but i only run it a few time. i think if i ran it more cycles it'd show some residual. i used 200 ft/lbs because in my simulation i had each end fastened and not moving, unlike real life. might play with it again when the boss is gone and he leaves the puter here with ansys on it.

umm... really whats the problem? if they are labled D and P, you know what side they came from, so put em on that way
i certainly cant hurt.i just ordered my SLP posi and also ordered some 28 spline axles from hawk's third gen parts. I will be keeping my stock gearset of 3.23 so thats not an issue. Seeing as im not doing a gear swap will i need anything else other than some mobil 1 gear oil? Also i heard that the SLP unit does not need posi additive is this correct?

Axle/Gears: 3.73 With Zexel Torsen Ltd. slip
Hey guys, I just finished my SLP carrier install on my '89 'vert. I did get my axles from the same guy on e-bay that alloy mentioned earlier in this thread. I went with 3:73's (from an open end 2:73 set up), and all I can say is MAN!!!! whatta difference!! Unfortunately, it started drizzling as we buttoned up everything, but I can deffinitely tell a difference!
The only thing I have left to do to complete this project is to get the speedo calibration gears for the tranny, because it is WAYYYYYYY off!! For anyone considering this project, it is well worth it, you won't be dissappointed!

Drop Top,
Well I'm very glad to hear the axles I found, and everything else worked out for you so well.
I know when I put the 3.42's in my car, I was 18% off on the speed and odometer. I had mine run on the rollers at a speedo shop to check it. I wanted to be as close as possible with my speedo since my car attracts enough attention as it is. So I didn't want to be off 4-5 mph and give the cops an excuse to pull me over. Now I'm within +- 1 .5% of being perfectly accurite I'm told.
