some units can be rebuilt. i broke mine and i bought the Auburn unit from jegs. i installed it myself. it cost around $320 all together. oh yeah the Auburn unit is not rebuildable because it is a cone set up. you probably have a clutch type, which can be rebuilt. the cost can vary. when i broke mine i called a chevy dealership to see how much it would cost to have fixed and the guy said around $700.
gm overprices everything...
how do i know what unit to buy for my application.
BTW i asked if a posi unit could be rebuilt because i was thinking of going to the juckyard and getting one and having it rebuilt.
i think ill just buy it new.
what do i need to do to install it?
sry for all the questions...:hail:

You’re going to need to know 2 things: Axle count & carrier series.
I think '86 used 26 spline axles? and the carrier series will relate to your current gear ratio. (2) series for 3.08 and lower, & (3) series for 3.23 and higher.
If your replacing the posi unit with an OEM unit, you MIGHT be able to get away with a straight swap, but with an aftermarket unit, your probably going to need to reset the pinion depth, and backlash (good time for a gear swap, if you had to go through that crap!)
If you don't have the tools, pass it on to a shop. I'm serious, I spent an fair amount of money on tools for doing this job, and shop presses aren't exactly sold in any hardware store.
