My shifter was working fine yesterday, but today I could only shift it from neutral to overdrive. The ignition key is stuck in the column because I can't shift it into park. I can still drive it, but the shift light comes on. I took it to the shop today, but they were pretty backed up.


I did unscrew the shifter plate indicator, and when I put it back in, that's when I couldn't shift it to the other gears.

Can anyone tell me why my shifter won't shift into park or the other drives?

 

Sounds like the shifter cable bracket came loose on the tranny. The bracket is bolted to the tranny via two of the pan bolts and its not unusual for them to vibrate loose. I'm willing to bet that if you look on the drivers side of your trans, you'll see a loose bracket and two missing bolts in the pan. Its an easy fix that you can do yourself.

 

Thanks. The shop told me it was the plunger in the shifter, which was has been sticking for a while and now it finally stoped releasing. The shifter cable bracket is still bolted tightly. I don't have the time and I don't feel like fixing it myself. I would have gone to the junkyard and gotten a replacement, but all the thirdgens there are completely stripped so I have to wait a week until the new parts come in.
