torque bar
i am getting ready to pull the 2.8 engine and tranny out of my 88 FB. I was reading my Chilton's Manual, and under the trans. part, it says that you have to take loose the rear end, and take the springs out and all of that crap in order to get the tranny out without some kind of a roll. I am not sure about all of this, I just know that I need to get it out in order to sell it, and it will be a little while before I get the new engine and tranny in it, and I will also be needing to move (push) it around a little bit during this time. Thank you
If this an 88 Firebird, I have never heard of anyone having to take a rear end out to get a transmission out. I have an 89 Camaro and have takin a 5 speed out and replaced it with a 6 speed and never had even thought about taking the rear end out to do it. I had no problems either.

well the torque arm is preloaded by the rear springs
but you can gingerly jack up on the centerhousing and that will rotate the front of the rearend down slightly .. to keep the T/A from binding on the bottom of the car.
Twice now I've pulled my trans, all I do is put the axle on stands and pull down on the tq arm while undoing the mount, then let it rise up and rest against the trans tunnel. Yes it is loaded but if 125 lb me can pull it down and hold it to put the mount back on I doubt it will hurt anything to roll the car around with the trans out.
If you take it off at the rear without unloading it make sure your medical insurance is up to date.
