Another "dumb" posi question

I know that this is probably a stupid question, but I am trying to learn as I go!

I just got done reading another post regarding a "posi" rear-end. It stated that off the ground, if you spin the wheel, if they both spin in the same direction, then it is posi, if they spin opposite then it is an "open" rear-end. Is this true only for a "true" posi, or would a limited slip also spin both wheels in the same direction?

The reason that I ask is this: I was told, by numerous people that my car had a stock limited slip rear-end. I have a 1983 Z28, that stock had a 305 4 BB and a T5. In all respects, it seems to "act" like a limited slip on the road, but is there really an easy way of knowing, short of removing the cover, and did my car come with a stock limited slip? Thanks a bunch, James

A limited slip can do both...If both tires go forwrd you can either have a true posi (aftermarket), or most likely a limited slip...But I have seen limited slips that one went forward and one went back, not often but I've seen it. You can try and find the RPO sheet but I have no clue where it would be on a 83. If both tires leave almost a perfect imprint of each other when you let her go,you've at least got yourself a Limited slip diff. If only sometimes they both lite up then it is a open rear. Being that it is a Stick shift I think you can feel safe that it is a limited slip.

Thanks for the information.
Another question: When I decide to change the rear fluid this spring (Michigan!), what can I look at to see what type of rear-end I have? Should clutches be obvious if it is limited slip? Thanks Again

Not a problem, glad to be of help...Look for any type of springs, I am not positive what style the 83's used it may have a big S shaped spring in the middle of the carrier, or a buch of small springs. If it has no springs in the middle of it then it is a open rear. Remeber, that if it does have springs (posi/limited slip) you need to put a Limited slip additive when refilling the gear oil. You can get this at any local auto supplier.
