backlash?

I purchased a SLP posi unit, and some 28 spline axles, can i swap these over into my existing rear 3.42 open rear without shimming the ring gear, can i just put the exact shimming that was orginally in it, back in, or do i need to re-shim it?

thanks

Kevin

You may get lucky and you might not. The only way you'll know is to put it in and check it. Gear pattern is comprised of two things: Pinion placement and backlash. Well, your not touching the pinion at all, so all you'll have to do is get the backlash correct and the gear pattern should be right on. Put the carrrier in and check the backlash. Then run a pattern check just to be sure. Thats the only way to know if change is needed or not.

you don't shim the ring gear, you shim the carrier, which is sort of the same, but not quite. get the correct back lash and all should be well, liek was already said check contact pattern.

Since you have a gear set that you have been running, measure the backlash before you take the open carrier out, then when you put the zexel back in try and shoot for the same backlash. That way you won't alter the mesh pattern of the gears.
