What size rear gear do I have?

What size rear gear dso I have? I know its a 2.73 posi but what size is it 8.5 or 7.5/8 and if I wanted to change from my 2.73 to say 3.42 would I just need to change out the ring and pinion gears?

thanks

You didn't get a picture of the whole housing, but it appears to be a 7.5/7.65" limited slip differential.

what do you mean the whole housing? its a 10 bolt if that helps? and when you say limited slip,,,thats posi for Chevy right? cause when I have it raised in the rear and turn one wheel the other turns in the same direction....if that matters..

Limited slip, posi, yada yada yada... Its all the same.

As for the whole housing, I just wanted to see the shape of the pan gasket, but if its out of a thirdgen, and had 10-bolts, then its the 7.5/7.65" rear axle.

If you want to upgrade to 3.42s, then you have two options. You can either get the Richmond Gear 3.42s specialy designed for "2" series carriers, or buy a "3" series carrier and standard 3.42 gears.

What kind of carrier? Well, since you said yourself it had 2.73s, then its a "2" series carrier.

As far as Eaton -vs- Auburn, Eaton did make Posi's that look like that, but I don't think they were installed in 3rd Gen's. I think the only Eaton limited slip installed in 3rd Gens (early ones at that) were more of a locker style. So my guess would be an Auburn which used Cones instead of Clutches.
