Is it rear or tranny???

While driving back from a repair shop my car started
making some strange sounds from the rear or tranny.
It's a horrible grinding sound.Well that was a couple
of months ago.I also don't drive it often and don't have
abundance of cash.So I let it set for a while.When I was
about to take it to get looked at it wouldn't move. The rear
was just locked so i don't know if it was the rear or trans.
so body help me Pleaseeeeeee .

Thanks to all.

Does it do it all the time and seem speed sensitive, or does it seem to come and go w/ the changing of the gears?

If its the rearend, it will be there ALL THE TIME and change pitch w/ speed. Usually if its a tranny (more than likely a planetary making a growling noise) it will come and go based on wether or not the gear is using that particular member or not.
