700R4 (actually 4L60) in my GTA is dead. The car is/was my daily driver and is stock for now. I know I could throw in a junk tranny for cheap, but I like to do things myself and do them right. So, I'm looking at rebuild kits. I talked to pro-built trans. and he was very helpful and knowledgable, but I 'm wondering about spending $600 on a tranny in a car I only paid $1600 for. I do want the tranny to be bulletproof though and the kit sounds like it's extremely complete and high-quality. Any ideas.

Second problem, I should throw a new converter on while I'm in there. I could buy a GM for ~$200 or spend $500+ on a performance 9.5" I don't want a junk converter that'll ruin a good tranny, but I don't want to invest a lot into a convertor that'll never see race use.

Which leads to a concrete question - what are the disadvantages of a 9.5" converter. I know it'll have better torque multiplication and a higher stall and have less mass, but will it have less vibration dampening or other street and durability disadvantages.

Thanks for the replies, I'm learning all over agian.

well aaron, If you want a good converter for a good price check out the guys at www.ptcrace.com

I have a few friends running these at the track and have good luck out of them. They will make a converter custom to your needs.

As for adding vibration, or the small TC shortening transmission life?, it will do neither.
