Shift Fork?

I'm not sure if this is the correct part name.. I'm looking into buying a car with a T5, and the guy said he broke the 3-4 shift fork, so 3rd and 4th gears aren't usable until it's fixed. he said he's replaced them before, and they're cheap, but you have to drop the transmission all the way down. any of this sound right? and if so, what exactly IS the shift fork? what's it do? (sorry, I'm not a transmission guy at all.. more of an engine guy) Thanks.

Yes, you have to pull it; remove the extension housing; then remove the cover. The shift forks are what connects the shifter rail to the "sleeve", the outer portion of the synchro, and actually slide it into and out of gear.

Notice in the pic, the one closer to the camera (1st-2nd) is broken, on the right-hand tang.... also, the plastic pads that go on them are all missing.

Thanks, that picture helps.. I'm a big visual guy.. so, if you've got more pictures that may be helpful, feel free to email them to me.. kevin718@nc.rr.com .. think I should try fixing this (with the help of a friend) without much tranny knowledge? I'm pretty good with other stuff.. I should have another car to drive while I'm fixing it, so that part isn't a big deal... and where can I get the shift fork from? I didn't see them anywhere online.. Thanks

I went to www.hanlonmotorsports.com for all of my T5 needs. I ended up replacing quite a few things, and they were very helpful in choosing the parts that I needed vs. what was nice to have. Also expedited shipping for me too! Very good to deal with!
