Should the car roll back at any time while in drive?

If I were going up a steep hill, stopped and let off the brake, should the car roll back or should the tranny hold the car?

It depends on how steep the hill is and "loose" the converter is.

it at least should be trying to hold the car.

I know on a really steep hill my car would roll back when it had an auto. Of course, I cant remember if I had the stock converter in it at that time, or the 2500 Daaco. Either way, there was nothing wrong with my tranny, and it rolled back.

Even with a stock converter, if it's very steep at all it won't keep in stationary--it has no internal brake to 'hold' the car. In fact, you would have to find just the right resistance (incline) to get your car to not move in drive without holding the brake. To much incline and it will roll back, too little and it will roll forward. Torque converter, idle rpm, vehicle weight, incline angle, etc... all affect this.
