Converters

Hey guys, Well i recetly purchased this 89 about a month ago. Now im big into camaros but i have never taken an auto class and im not very experienced with cars. But i have been told my car has about 330 hp at the wheels and the guy had the dyno to prove it. Now heres my question. My car runs really good but the trans is my problem. It has a 700r4 thats been rebuilt. But it seems to shift really early out of the first and secnd gears. I can drop it down to 1 and put it redlien and u cn really feel the power. My question is what is causing me to not be able to do this in just drive when i slam it to the floor. i think its the tv cable to the trans. But if this is set like this is there a point in putting in a shift kit and stall converter. Also what exactly does a stall converter do and will it help me out alot?

The TV cable should be adjusted properly. The name, "throttle valve", tells you it is more than a kick-down - it changes internal pressures based on throttle position, and therefore, power. If incorrectly adjusted, it'll do your tranny damage. It will also change shift points.

Otherwise, your description, JD, sounds fairly "normal". The stays-in-2nd-when-you-floor-it-above-15mph is a typical characteristic of the TH700 - that's why I drive with one hand on the shift ****. But, make sure the TV cable is adjusted properly.

The shift points are really controlled by the govenor. A shift kit won't change that. A Transgo shift kit addresses design weaknesses of the TH700, but you need a govenor kit to change shift point.

A "stall converter" is short for "higher-stalling converter". All torque converters "stall", but the RPM at which that occurs varies. The factory uses fairly low stalling converters for the sake of fuel economy, and to some extent, the "feel" of power. A high stall converter lets the engine spin up into its power band before "stalling" the engine from going any higher - without vehicle movement. If your engine really puts 330 HP to the wheels, a factory stall converter is likely really bogging it down in low RPMs. I really question "330 dyno HP at the wheels", though.

what exactly is the TV cable.

sorry not fond of auto trannys so haven't learn a lot about them yet.

EDIT: so I took a while to post this and for the most part you answered my question

but as far as the 330hp dyno I kinda question also
don't mean to be rude but ppl can pring out a desktop dyno and say hey look this motor make such and such power when it is really only a LG4 they have under the hood, or they can give you a dyno from another car

best thing would be take it to the track or put on the dyno again with your eyes watching
