Transmission trouble. . .
My transmission kicks itself out of 5th gear every once and a while. My clutch is new, but got fryed once, cause it was the clutch or the car. Someone almost t-boned me, so i dropped the clutch at like 3500 going in reverse, the only option besides getting hit. I put in the new clutch when my trans was out last ( bout 20,000 miles ago). The gears were stock between fourth and fifth. My dad said that the pads on the forks were torn apart, so he put the old ones ( he rebuilt my trans awhile back before this) back on. The clutch was always fine, just lost alittle stick after my close call. Its harder to shift at the first 10-15 of running, but then the trans gets warm and it shifts fine, but it has recently been throwing out the fifth gear. What do you think? I dont beat on it, but sometimes i have some fun
, hope its nothing too serrious. Thanks

If its hard to shift when cold but fine when warm, it sounds like the wrong fluid is in there. What fluid is in there?

I believe it is ATF Dexatron II, but im not sure. It might be someting really close, but I know it is atf and it should be right cause my dad did it, and he is an ASE in HVAC-R and has 25+ yrs in Auto. I cant ask him though, he is in another state. It also kicks out of reverse if i give it alot of gas. I also found that if I leave my hand pressed against the shifter in 5th, it will stay. Make sense?

I'm no tranny expert by any means, but it sounds like a rebuild to me. Had the same thing happen to me on an old Toyota truck I had. I know its a bit diffrent than a Chevy tranny, but theyre all gears and bearings. Mine turned out to be a bad input shaft which ultimately did not allow the gears to mesh together enough to hold itself in gear. Worn teeth will also cause it to pop out of gear. From what I understand from numerous sources is that one of the main things that holds it in gear is the gear itself, or more specifically, the way the teeth of the gears match up. Simply put, if I were you, I'd call Dad and have him open up the tranny and have a look inside.
Hope that helps.
